Bamboo Island

Bamboo Island

A pristine tropical paradise in the Phi Phi archipelago featuring powdery white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs perfect for snorkeling and relaxation

Bamboo Island, locally known as Koh Mai Phai, is part of Thailand's renowned Phi Phi archipelago, located approximately 5 kilometers off the northeastern tip of Phi Phi Don Island. Interestingly, the English name "Bamboo Island" was given by mistake, as no bamboo actually grows on the island. The name comes from the casuarina trees that cover the landscape.

This tropical gem offers a peaceful escape from the busier parts of the archipelago, remaining relatively quiet despite some post-lunch tours from Phuket briefly visiting. Accessible only by water transport and situated approximately 25-30 kilometers off the coasts of both Phuket and Krabi, Bamboo Island represents one of the Andaman Sea's most picturesque destinations.

When to Visit Bamboo Island

The island is accessible year-round, with the best conditions typically during the dry season (November to April) when seas are calmer and visibility for snorkeling is optimal. Most tours arrive between late morning and early afternoon, so visiting on early morning tours or later afternoon trips can provide a more tranquil experience with fewer crowds.

What to Experience

Pristine Beach & Swimming

Bamboo Island boasts pristine white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, creating an idyllic setting for swimming and sunbathing. Visitors can spend the day swimming in the warm Andaman Sea or simply relaxing in the shade of the coconut palms, with the island offering a tranquil escape with unspoiled natural beauty and a serene atmosphere.

Snorkeling

Good snorkeling is available on all sides of the island, with coral formations just under the water. The surrounding waters are home to diverse marine life including lion-fish, leopard sharks, and hawksbill sea turtles. The coral reefs are located approximately 50 meters off the white sandy beach, making them easily accessible for snorkelers of all levels.

Relaxation & Photography

The island's unspoiled natural beauty makes it an ideal location for photography, peaceful beach walks, and simply disconnecting from the bustle of everyday life. The combination of white sand, turquoise waters, and lush casuarina tree coverage creates stunning tropical vistas.

Location & Setting

Bamboo Island is the most north-easterly island of the Phi Phi archipelago, lying approximately 5 kilometers off the northern tip of Koh Phi Phi Don. Despite its relatively small size, the island boasts one of the most stunning landscapes in the region, characterized by its flat terrain and evergreen vegetation.

The island is part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, ensuring its natural environment remains protected and preserved for future generations.
