Phuket High Season: When to Go, What It Costs and How to Book Your Island Trips

What Phuket High Season Actually Means
Phuket High Season is the dry, sunny stretch of the year when the Andaman Sea turns calm and the island fills up. Most guides say November to April, and that is a good rule of thumb. In practice it has three moods. November is the shoulder, with the last of the monsoon rain fading out, and Loy Krathong lights up the island on 24 November 2026. Mid December to February is the peak, with the best weather and the highest prices. March and April are hot and still calm, and Songkran water festival lands on 13 to 15 April.
Phuket High Season Weather Month by Month
Here is what to expect in Phuket High Season, using typical monthly averages.
November: around 16 rainy days, some waves, daytime highs near 32°C.
December: about 8 rainy days and calm seas.
January: only 4 to 5 rainy days, the best swimming of the year.
February: around 3 rainy days, hot at 33 to 34°C, with excellent sea visibility.
March: calm and hot, with the odd swell.
April: warming up, and showers start to return late in the month.
If you want the safest bet for blue sky and flat water, aim for January or February.
What Opens Up in Phuket High Season
This is the season boats were made for. Phang Nga Bay is lovely from November to April, with calm water between the limestone cliffs. The Similan Islands national park opens on 15 October 2026 and stays open until mid May 2027. And Maya Bay reopened on 1 October after its yearly rest, so the Phi Phi area is back in full swing.
One tip for Phuket High Season: pick your boat style early. A big boat is relaxed, with room to move and a long lunch stop. A speed boat is quicker and lets you reach more stops in a day. Our James Bond Island Day Tour By Big Boat suits families and anyone who wants a slow, scenic day in Phang Nga Bay. Our Phi Phi and Khai Island by Speed Boat day suits people who want clear water, snorkelling and more island time.
How Busy and Expensive Is Phuket High Season?
Busy and a little pricey. Hotel rates in Phuket High Season are commonly 30 to 50 percent above low season, and the peak days around New Year and Chinese New Year (6 February 2027) bring the biggest crowds. More flights are arriving too. Virgin Atlantic is flying London to Phuket three times a week until 26 March 2027, and Edelweiss, Kuwait Airways and Belavia have all started new routes this autumn.
Popular viewpoints such as Koh Panyi and Khao Phing Kan are at their most crowded from December to February. The simple fix is to take an early pickup and be on the first boat out.
How Far Ahead to Book in Phuket High Season
For beachfront hotels over Christmas and New Year, book one to two months ahead, and earlier if you can. Island tours move quicker than you might think in Phuket High Season. A few days is the usual minimum, and peak dates can sell out sooner. If you are travelling on 25 December to 3 January or around Chinese New Year, lock your tour in as soon as your flights are booked.
